Hubbie's Book Review
Welcome to another full on story from one of America's upcoming authors.  Excitement and intrigue is found on every single page. The authors brilliance in bringing together the rich, an illegal smuggling racket and a poor boy is first rate.  The human element of greed and the lengths that people will go to get what they want is prominently portrayed throughout the story. Kurt's story portrays an up to date issue that is affecting the whole of the planet, illegal trapping and animal smuggling and the damage and impact on the people it involves.

The characters are brought to life by the authors brilliant descriptive writing and also touches the nerve ends like no other author can. The bravery of the author to move away from his fire fighting mysteries has to be applauded and again has not let the reader down.

Praise for Kurt Kamm and his hard hitting, page turning novels which provide an excellent read and never disappoint.

About the Author
I live in Malibu, California and have used used my contacts with CalFire, Los Angeles County and Ventura County Fire Departments, as well as the ATF and DEA to write fact-based (“faction”) novels.

I have written a series of firefighter mystery novels, which have won several literary awards.

My newest novel, The Lizard’s Tale, is a story about an orphan from the streets of Mexico, caught in the struggle between the DEA and the Sinaloa Cartel. It is not like any other cartel book or novel. I wrote it after attending the DEA Citizen's Academy, and it provides a unique and exciting look inside the activities of the Mexican drug lords and the DEA men dedicated to stopping them.

Each of my firefighter novels features a firefighter with a special skill: Wildland / Arson Investigation / Fire Paramedic / HazMat/ Urban Search and Rescue. Each story is told from the viewpoint of the firefighter and involves both his fire specialty and a a personal problem he is battling.

I have built an avid fan base among first responders and other readers. A graduate of Brown University and Columbia Law School, I was previously a financial executive and semi-professional bicycle racer. I was also Chairman of the UCLA/Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Foundation for several years.

Bucky--divorced and lonely--struggles with painkiller addiction. One night Task Force 103 is toned out to support a Sheriff's raid on a meth lab. Bucky thinks he sees his sister at the door of a double- wide trailer in the Mojave Desert just before it explodes.

Bucky's life is in chaos. While he searches for answers to his sister's death, he is drawn into a conflict with the Vagos, who are selling drugs in the Mojave Desert. After a confrontation in which the Vagos nearly kill him, Bucky exacts an unusual revenge that only a HazMat firefighter could accomplish.

Book Review - Hazardous Material by Kurt Kamm

About the Author

Malibu resident Kurt Kamm has used his contact with CalFire, Los Angeles County Fire Department, Ventura County Fire Department and the ATF, as well as his experience in several devastating local wildfires, to write fact-based firefighter mystery novels. He has attended classes at El Camino Fire Academy and trained in wildland firefighting, arson investigation and hazardous materials response.  He is currently riding with Los Angeles County Fire Department’s famed urban search and rescue task force. He is a graduate of the ATF Citizen’s Academy.

One of the Malibu fires, the 60 mile-per-hour Santa Ana wind-driven Canyon Fire, burned to his front door and destroyed the homes of several neighbors. Kamm said the lessons he learned from the County Fire Department while writing his books helped him save his home.

Kurt Kamm has built an avid fan base among first responders. Each of his firefighter mysteries features a firefighter in a particular discipline (wildland, arson investigation, paramedic, hazardous material response, and search and rescue).  His first novel, One Foot in the Black (2008) has become a favorite of firefighters.  Subsequent novels, Red Flag Warning: A Serial Arson Mystery (Aberdeen Bay, 2010) and Code Blood (MCM Publishing, 2012) have won numerous fiction awards (see attached summary). Kamm’s latest book, Hazardous Material, has just been released.  He is currently attending search & rescue training and working on his fifth novel.

Our Book Review
This is the second book I have read by this author, the first being Code Blood which was first rate, the sign of a great author is making the novels fresh and different whilst entertaining the reader.

The writer gives a really good synopsis of his past life and where he draws and uses his inspirations from. This really shines through and by using real people and events with no soft soap you can relate to the situations and the experiences in which the main character is facing and feeling.

The story revolves around Bucky Dawson who is determined to find out what happened to his dead sister and along the way brings him into contact with two rival motorcycle gangs and a world of drug taking, which endangers his own life.

The aspects and ways of the motorcycle gangs are expertly described with hard hitting and gritty facts with startling results again are testimony to the authors research and knowledge.

What makes the difference in a book or novel for myself is the message that the writer is trying to portray or get across.  I think in the message here is that everyone has a different way of coping or getting through the day whether its being a member of a gang which gives you security and comradeship or by taking certain pills to help-you survive.  The story also makes you really think about what action you would actually follow if someone hurt a member of your family, what lengths would you go to find out the truth?

The author is one that I am now following and hopefully will get a chance to read further works because his writing is down to earth, close to the heart and involves real life situations.

“Kamm has nailed the world of motorcycle meth–gang violence and given us a hero, battling his own demons and sliding into painkiller addiction. A real page-turner.” - Mitchell S. Rosenthal, M.D., Founder, Phoenix House

"For action thrillers based on facts and real people within our community few writers can outdo Kurt Kamm. His new novels (and it is now certain they will keep coming!) just get better and better. This man writes with a razor instead of a pen, but then of course his close connection to the realm of firefighting on every level reassures the reader that he is not just `creating’ dramas." - Grady Harp

"Wow, this book takes you into an area most of us don't know much about - biker gangs, drugs, toxic waste and the dedicated fire fighters and law enforcement trying to contain it. The mystery moves right along and doesn't give the reader many opportunities for their mind to wonder. This book is a real page-turner. It is both entertaining and educational. Kamm did his research well to provide us with an inside look into this dark world. His writing style makes you feel that you are right there part of the action." - Amazon.com

Book Description
A young Los Angeles County Fire paramedic responds to a fatal accident. A woman’s foot has been severed. Who is she, and what happened to her foot?

During a week long search, while he risks his career to find the victim’s identity and her missing foot, Colt Lewis visits the dark side of Los Angeles, an underworld of Goth fetishists and body parts dealers. He encounters a woman with a full upper body tattoo, a mysterious Chinese woman involved in stem-cell research, and a killer.

When he finally finds the foot and buries it in the San Gabriel Mountains, the paramedic brings closure to the woman’s death and resolves the absence of his mother who deserted him a decade earlier.

Firemen at workThere is a flame that burns inside of us. It is what keeps us going, from house to house or wreck to wreck. We know that once we put that gear on, we are stronger than superman. The flame that burns inside each of us rouses us to save others. We put our lives at risk for others, it is what we do. Not everyone has that flame. We face the devil every day and somehow we win the battle. We love it, if we didn’t, why would we do it? WE LIVE TO FIGHT AND FIGHT TO LIVE.

Book Review
A turn paging enthralling story - the characters and places portrayed by the author give the reader a perfect picture and you can imagine yourself in the background observing and following the main characters.

A rookie fire paramedic on a shout is horrified to find a victims severed foot has disappeared, but who has taken it and who would want it?   This is a mystery he cannot let go of and will pursue all avenues to solve.  The thief is an albino goth who has a strange fetish and obsessions, he gets drawn into the Russian underworld to feed his fetish habits, which he then has to find ways of making money to pay them or lose his life.  Working in a research lab, the goth finds a way he could pay the Russians back after discovering a Chinese student has a very rare blood type, which his fellow goths, who have a taste for human blood, would buy.

Will the paramedic solve his mystery before the goth gets his blood?  Will the goth survive or die?

This story had me hooked from page one and I found it really hard to put down.  The author has kept the storyline simple which means the reader can get to grips with what makes each character tick and their reasons for pursuing their own individual goals.   I would strongly recommend this book to all readers who enjoy a really good thriller.
