I did a ridiculous amount of research! I interviewed experts I tracked down online, subscribed science-y magazines, read articles, listened to podcasts. A lot of podcasts, specifically, Robots; and Singularity 1 on 1.

Author Interview with Georgia Clark

1.     Can you tell me more about the book beyond what it listed on the back cover and what inspired you to write it?

I grew up watching great sci-fi movies like Bladerunner and Star Wars and have always been attracted to the genre: equal parts exciting/fun and thoughtful/insightful. I loved The Hunger Games and felt inspired to write something of that ilk: a young girl in a brave new world, fighting for what she believes in. Unlike Katniss, Tess comes from wealth: she grew up in the lush, beautiful, technically advanced city of Eden, but she fled for the surrounding Badlands when her mother was killed by a rogue robot called an artilect. Now she has an opportunity to come back, right her wrongs, and start something of revolution, thanks to the scrappy eco-activists, Kudzu…. 

2.     I really like to meet the authors who write the books I read, do you have any events planned, if so when and where?

Me too! It’s so fun to see someone in person, and get a real sense of what they’re about: all their little quirks and mannerism that make them into someone real. I don’t have any planned events right now, but if I do, I post them at georgiaclark.com

3.     What's your favorite fan memory?

I am so fond of my darling fan Charlie Needles. She’s a supercool Twitter friend who wrote an EPIC review of Parched on her Tumblr: it was over 10,000 words long! She pulled out all this interesting stuff about it, it was really flattering. 

4.     Some authors have deals with bookstores near their home where readers can order signed and personalized copies of their work, do you have such an arrangement? If a reader wants a signed copy of your work and can't make it to your events where would they go to get one?

Yes! You can order a signed copy of Parched into Word bookstore, my local store in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. You can also email me proof of purpose (like a photo of your receipt), and I’ll email you a pretty bookplate, totally free! More about this on my website. 

5.     What advice would you have to aspiring writers and can you tell me about your writing process & journey?

My advice: Write stories in genres you read, and that you personally, would love to pick up in a bookstore. Commit to a regular writing schedule, ideally in a space away from home. Try the app Freedom if the internet distracts you. Don’t worry about the lacklustre first chapter; you’ll find your writing gathers steam later and you’ll go back and rewrite it anyway. Remember that talent is persistence: most writers don’t sell their first book, they sell their third or fourth. Writing is the long game: stick at it. Live a life worth writing about: take risks, say yes, follow your heart, and me, on Twitter: @georgialouclark cuz I tweet writing tips from time to time.

I’m refining my writing process all the time. I try to start with an essentially compelling concept or idea, something that taps into something universal or very relatable, and build out from that. I like to work from an outline, and only start drafting when I have a pretty good sense of what the first draft will look like. I try to leave some things up to chance and pure imagination, but generally, I’m a plot nerd who loves a nicely structured story. (Hunger Games, anyone?) 

6. Is there anything else you'd like to add that you want readers to know about you or your work? 

I’m not just a novelist, I’m also a playwright! My roommate and I wrote a play called “Pickles and Hargraves, and the Curse of the Tanzanian Glimmerfish”, and it’s about a mouse who solves mysteries. We put it on last year at the NY Fringe Festival, and it was one of the most fun things I’ve ever done. The rewards of creative expression are so real: of course it’s nice (and necessary) to get paid for your talent, but sometimes, the most fun you’ll have is with your side projects.  

Also, I’m teaching a short, online course this month (January) through a site called Lit Reactor. It’s about creating a compelling sci-fi premise for a short story or novel. If you’ve always wanted to write a sci-fi, or you’re just looking for something to kickstart your imagination, sign up!
