Book Review - On Toby's Terms (A DOG BOOK WITH A SURPRISE HAPPY ENDING) by Charmaine Hammond plus SIGNED BOOK Giveaway - 5 Winners!!

When Charmaine and her husband adopted Toby, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, they figured he might need some adjusting time, but they certainly didn’t think he’d be a holy terror, beset by severe anxiety and destructive behavior that would take a miracle to curb. Turns out, Toby routinely opened and emptied closets, turned on water taps, and pulled things from the bookshelves. Oddest of all was his penchant for locking himself in the bathroom, and then push the lid of the toilet tank onto the floor, smashing it to pieces. After a particularly disastrous encounter with the knife-block in the kitchen—and when the couple discovered Toby’s blood and paw prints on the phone—Charmaine decided Toby needed professional help.

Little did she know what they would discover about this dog. And how he would change their lives.

Our Book Review
I never had the pleasure of meeting adorable Toby or infact Toby Junior, but I feel like I know them so well having previously posted about him and Charmaine, the author, some years back. It was great to get to read the new and updated version of this book. Anyone who owns a dog or has dealings with one will love this read and completely sympathise with Toby's owners.  The outstanding fact of this true life story is the owners determination to not give up on Toby and find his true nature and calling.

Like our own two dogs, Toby was adopted from a dog rescue centre and again like our two he came with his own ways - some bad, some good!!  Toby found a lovely home with author Charmaine and her husband but everytime they left him he left a trail of destruction and heartbreak.  The stress that this causes brings the marriage to breaking point. After trying dog training and several dog experts they finally find their answer in getting Toby a purpose and a focus, this comes about when they take Toby to a hospital who look after people with mental illness.  Toby's new purpose is becoming a Pet Assisted Therapy Dog and the effect it has on both Toby and the patients is amazing and it turns his life completely around.

It just goes to show that just like humans if you are prepared to invest in something you love and give the time needed the rewards are boundless. A really heart warming read with a good feel factor which will restore your faith in the ones you love.  Toby's journey began the inspirational efforts of raising over $10,000 for charities and teachings of character development in children across North Amercia.

On Toby's Terms
When Charmaine and her husband adopted Toby, a five-year-old Chesapeake Bay retriever, they figured he might need some adjusting time, but they certainly didn't count on what he'd do in the meantime. Soon after he entered their lives and home, Toby proved to be a holy terror who routinely opened and emptied the hall closet, turned on water taps, pulled and ate things from the bookshelves, sat for hours on end in the sink, and spent his days rampaging through the house. Oddest of all was his penchant for locking himself in the bathroom, and then pushing the lid of the toilet off the tank, smashing it to pieces. After a particularly disastrous encounter with the knife- block in the kitchen-and when the couple discovered Toby's bloody paw prints on the phone-they decided Toby needed professional help. Little did they know what they would discover about this dog. On Toby's Terms is an endearing story of a beguiling creature who teaches his owners that, despite their trying to teach him how to be the dog they want, he is the one to lay out the terms of being the dog he needs to be. This insight would change their lives forever.

Toby the Pet Therapy Dog, and his hospital friends
Toby is a big, brown, happy dog. Every week, his owner, Miss Charmaine takes him to visit and comfort children who are in the hospital. Follow Toby the service dog for a day, and see how he makes friends with the children, helps make them happy and forget that they are sick and away from home. * Beautifully illustrated, Toby, the Pet Therapy Dog teaches young readers the wonders of being of service to others. * A happy story that also sends a positive message about community, as well as the importance of kindness to pets.

A little doggy excerpt from his book On Toby's Terms
    Oh, Toby!
You never know when your life is going to change.
“Hi, honey,” I said into my cell phone as I unlocked my
car. “I gave my presentation; it went great, and I’m on my
way home. How was your day?”
“My day was wonderful . . . until I walked into the
    house.”
    “Uh-oh . . .”
“The place is a total disaster.
    Your dog knocked over all
four dining room chairs, the lamp in the living room, and

that little table your mom gave you.”
"My dog?” I sank into the driver’s seat, clutching my cell

phone, suddenly dreading the three-hour drive from Calgary
back to Edmonton because of what I envisioned I’d
    find when I got home.
“I’m at my wits’ end, Char. There’s mud and blood
    everywhere.”
I froze in the act of turning the ignition key. “Blood?”
“That darned dog climbed on the kitchen counter,
knocked over the knife block, and cut two of his feet. Then
he tracked blood all over the kitchen, the living room, the
    hallways, the basement . . .”
    “Is he okay?”
    “Is
    he okay? What about me?”
I cringed at the volume of his voice. “I’m sorry, honey,”
I said, visualizing our eighty-five pound Chesapeake Bay
retriever walking across the kitchen counter, the sink, and
stove, tracking blood. “How bad are his cuts?”
“Not too bad, but I had to pin him down to get his feet
cleaned up and bandage his two front paws. He’ll live.”
Christopher didn’t sound altogether pleased at the
    prospect.
Under other circumstances, a vision of my normally
mild-mannered and easygoing husband chasing our dog
through the house might have been amusing. But not now.
Apart from the cut feet, which was a new twist, this was
not the first—or the second, or the third—disaster we’d
faced since bringing Toby into our home a few months earlier.
It was peculiar, because for the first few weeks after we
got him, things had been quite uneventful. But now one
    incident led to another.
“There’s more,” Chris said. “He knocked the books and
candles off the coffee table and tipped the wooden table in
the foyer over so it was blocking the door. I could barely get
in. The flower planters were knocked over and so was the
water cooler, which had a full canister of water in it this
    2 On Toby’s Terms
morning. Not now. Now the water’s all over our nice hardwood
floor. That damn dog tore the boot racks from the
closet wall and emptied the contents into the front
entrance. He tracked bloody footprints all over the downstairs
carpet. The house looks like a crime scene.”
    “It can’t be that bad.”
“It can’t? You wouldn’t recognize the kitchen or living
room. Char, when I assess all the damage caused by this
unruly, incorrigible, untrained, ill-mannered, and soon-tohave-
    another-home dog . . .”
“Don’t say that. I know there have been some problems,
but Toby’s a great dog in so many ways. He’s just got a little
    problem and we’ll fix it.”
    “A
little problem? You should see the phone in the
kitchen. It’s bloody, too. Maybe he was trying to call 9-1-1.”
“That’s funny, Chris!” I laughed. “Just hang on, honey.
    I’ll be home soon.”
    “
Not funny,” my dear husband replied. “I’ve had it this
time. I’m done with that dog!”
“Please, just hang on. When I get home, I’ll help you
clean up after my . . . after
    our dog.”
I heard him release a deep breath. “We can’t keep living
    on Toby’s terms.”
    But lately we were.
    911?
    Oh, Toby!

Meet Toby - Guest Post - Healing on Four PAWs

best dog book
Meet Toby, I am one of his many new fans, he is just totally adorable !!
Like my own two dogs, Toby was adopted from a dog rescue centre and again like my two he came with his own ways - some bad, some good !!  Toby found a lovely home with author Charmaine Hammond, who realised that he needed a purpose and he became a Pet Assisted Therapy Dog, read her lovely guest post below.

Healing on Four PAWs
Just like a giggling child can bring a smile to your face, so can an animal. How many times have you smiled at a dog walking past you on the street with his owner, or the dog who has his head hanging out the car window- pink floppy tongue flapping about in the breeze, or the cat who is peering out the window of your neighbor’s house while soaking up the sun sitting on the back of a couch. For these brief moments, animals can take us away from the busyness of life.

Animals can be healers, reduce stress levels, minimize anxiety and provide therapeutic value in many health and educational environments. Our dog Toby, a Chesapeake Bay retriever provided me the gift of witnessing the richness that a dog can bring to another human through unconditional love. Toby made the dog Marley (from the movie Marley and Me) look like a saint.

We adopted Toby at age five from a local animal rescue organization, and shortly thereafter discovered that that he came with his own baggage, which included breaking toilet tank lids, rearranging furniture, opening and emptying closets and hiding things, on an almost daily basis. Choosing not to give up on Toby, we called for help. Maggie a local and highly qualified K9 Behaviorist and Trainer discovered that Toby was a dog who needed a job.

Toby became a Pet Assisted Therapy Dog at a mental health hospital. Every Wednesday for 4 ½ years he stepped into his purpose- he visited with patients offering unconditional love, 100% focus, and trust. The impact on patients varied from patient to patient. Toby’s presence on the unit (and his loud bark to announce he had arrived) brought patients out of their rooms, the general mood, and energy on the unit increased. Patients became more social with one another during the visits with Toby. In many ways, this dog acted like a connector, he brought people together, and, his presence became a safe topic of conversation. His desire to entertain the patients (through his ¾ summersaults, tossing the ball at patients to play fetch and sitting with his head on their lap) also encouraged laughter. And we all know that laughter reduces stress hormones and has a positive impact on health.

There is a lot of research to substantiate that pet owners live longer and healthier lives. They are often more physically active because their pets require that of them. In fact, Dr. Dawn Marcus, a neurologist who is involved in pet assisted therapy through her dogs, has done extensive research on this very topic. Dr. Marcus also reported that animals can also reduce anxiety, assist with focus, improve the immune system, and provide extensive therapeutic benefits to healing.

Toby’s work has been chronicled in Chicken Soup for the Soul- What I learned from the dog (Sept 2009), in a story titled Volunteering From The Heart.

Shortly after I wrote On Toby’s Terms, which is being turned into a major motion picture.

Toby’s children’s book was released in 2011 Toby The Pet Therapy Dog & His Hospital Friends (Bettie Youngs Books, 2011) teaching children lessons about friendship, kindness and helping others, and how a pet therapy dog can make a difference.

The patients that Toby worked with at the hospital and the thousands of children that he met in schools experienced the benefits of a therapy dog’s whose mission in life was to leave pawprints on hearts everywhere he went.

Toby even has his own two websites

Pop on over and give a big hug :-)

He is even on Facebook making new friends - Toby on Facebook and  On Toby’s Terms on Facebook
