I wrote my first eBook in 1991. In those days, like today, it wasn’t hard to do if you had something to say and a computer to produce it. But what was hard, was marketing those early eBooks. Even if you advertised the book on a service like CompuServe, Prodigy or AOL, how would you ever find people willing to tell other people about your book?

I “discovered” the Book Reviewer Yellow Pages more than five years ago; April 29, 2011 to be exact (then called The Indie Book Review Yellow Pages). Newspapers and magazines were still employing book reviewers and “book bloggers” were considered an anomaly, given the same respect that big publishers were giving the new-fangled eBook formats like Kindle.

Fast forward to today and those same reviewers—if they are still writing reviews—most likely have started a blog (and in fact might even be in this book). An indie author trying to get reviewed by a traditional media outlet is an exercise in futility. It’s also fair to say that eBooks have made the big publishers huge profits and now form a permanent part of their publishing operations.

Book blogging today has grown into a serious business. It is a necessary marketing tool to promote books and Christy Pinheiro-Silva’s Book Reviewer Yellow Pages—now in its sixth edition—is the definitive guide to this informal network of book reviewers.

Collectively they rival the promotional power of the large circulation newspapers and magazines. Individually they can help niche books break-out to a wider audience. And that’s what book marketing is all about: helping thousands of small products in scores of categories seek and find their own passionate audience.

How I met Christy is a testament to modern book marketing, itself a lesson for new publishers. As a long-time reader of the pioneering eBook news website Teleread.com, I came across an article saying that her second edition was available for free. Free is still a popular way to connect with readers but in 2011 it was the fastest, sure-fire way to get your name and book noticed. Everyone had Kindles to fill-up and as a book marketer and author, who couldn’t use a free directory?

By the time the fourth edition was published in 2013 it had grown to a 778 page tome. Seeing an opportunity for constructive feedback, I took to Amazon reviews to voice my ideas about what makes this guide book so important for my clients, and where I thought it could be improved. I’m happy to say that Christy read that review, contacted me, and took many of those suggestions to heart.

Here are the two things you should know about the Book Reviewer Yellow Pages:

1.       It defines a standard of etiquette. Christy’s 10 rules for author etiquette should be required reading for every author, regardless of whether or not book bloggers are part of your marketing mix. I confess it is so solid that I based a section of my own book, Successful eBook Publishing (Sellbox, 2012) on her advice. The blogosphere would be a better place if every author took her admonitions to heart in all their book promotion interactions.

2.       It codifies the essential facts about a book blogger, so you don’t have to. Shouldn’t we be able to just “Google” book bloggers and fire off emails to reviewers? Nope. In reality it isn’t that easy. Trying to find the pertinent information so you can approach the reviewer who is right for your book (see point 1) is going to take you hours! There are no standard website designs for review websites, and you will need to visit each one (again, see point 1). Here is where the Book Reviewer Yellow Pages shines. Your small investment will pay big dividends in saving time in finding the relevant reviewers, and their contact information.

But one thing still remains the same, as it did for me in 1991. You simply must get people talking about your book if you are ever going to be a successful author. A book no one talks about is even worse than a book that doesn’t make money.

Her Top 5 Review Books for 2012

We have been really lucky this year to have had the chance of reviewing some great books and have been amazed at the quality of writing we have come across.  It has been a really difficult task to narrow down just our Top 5 books for both of us as almost all of them are worthy of a mention, but here goes......

HER - TOP 5 REVIEW BOOKS FOR 2012

1  Desert Journey by Dr Jerry Burgener  (also Return to the Desert)
Reeling from yet another relationship failure, Jerry travels to the American Southwest to spend a couple of months riding his horse, savoring the warm weather, and finding respite from the daily grind. 3  Dawn of Saudi by Homa Pourasgari (also Lemon Curd)



This poignant mystery is about three people whose lives intertwine in a tale that depicts the oppression of women and the human rights abuse under the pretext of religion. Dawn Parnell made the mistake of marrying a Saudi; Sahar Al-Hijazi is forced to marry a man she doesn't love; Jason Crawford has business ties to the Al-Hijazi family. As the lives of these three people cross paths, the story takes the reader on a dangerous journey from Saudi Arabia where women are considered the property of a man, to United States where women are independent.

4  Stumbling Into Infinity by Michael Fischman
Stumbling Into Infinity is part of a long tradition of spiritual memoirs that began with St. Augustine’s Confessions, 1,600 years ago.  It opens the readers to new experiences and ways of seeing the world by letting them live the experience with the author.

5  Sitting Swing by Irene Watson (also Rewriting Life Scripts)

Irene Watson's pretentious life could go no further until she faced her past. Her moving and inspiring memoir begins at the end, in a recovery center, where she has gone to understand a childhood fraught with abuse, guilt, and uncertainty.

Two distinct parts of the book look at abusive child rearing and the process of recovery years later. This story shows change, growth, and forgiveness are possible. It gives hope and freedom to those accepting the past and re-writing life scripts that have been passed down for generations. It's never too late to change your life, never too late to heal.

A couple of extra mentions must also go to Order of Dimensions by Irene Helenowski which I absolutely loved as well and just missed out of the Top 5 and 'If I Should Die Before My Dog --' by Joe and Cathy Connolly  which is one of the most important books I have yet to review.

His Top 5 Review Books of 2012

We have been really lucky this year to have had the chance of reviewing some great books and have been amazed at the quality of writing we have come across.  It has been a really difficult task to narrow down just our Top 5 books for both of us as almost all of them are worthy of a mention, but here goes......

HIS - TOP 5 REVIEW BOOKS FOR 2012

1  The Call by Derald Hamilton  (also Twice Upon A Prequel)
Satire and the supernatural blend together in this humorous but disturbing account of divinity school and the people who are drawn to answering the call to ministry.

The story is conveyed in the first person through the eyes of Ishmael O'Donnell, an observant young man who wrestles with familial dysfunction, possession by the spirit of his long-dead twin brother, and a quest for purification from both.

The book chronicles the events that lead up to his seeking out seminary as a means of attaining this purification. Upon his arrival at seminary and his three year journey through the curriculum, he finds himself engulfed in an unending torrent of duplicity, impertinence, and societal abnormalities within a communal setting of characters so driven, tenacious, over-the-top, and supercilious, it hurts.

The mocking inner voice of Ishmael's twin reverberates louder and louder as he desperately tries to come to grips with what is taking place about him, while discovering who he is within the confines of a cloistered setting he finds to be inundated with its own unique form of madness.

And when he finally does obtain the key to his purification... but such things are not revealed second hand.

3  The Prophet - The New Brotherhood by K J Dahlen

5  Head Trip by Jack Eadon



When two brothers are conceived a month apart--called superfetation--then are born eight months later, one of them is a full-term baby and one of them is a preemie. That anomalie affected their whole lives as one twin struggled to succeed and the other struggled to keep up. For various reasons they were envious of each other, and their journey became a real head trip, both literally and figuratively. It continually challenged them to understand their twin and the dynamic that shaped their lives.

Authors On Reviews: To Comment Or Not To comment

The big question that has been discussed online recently.
From my personal point of view I absolutely love it when an author comments on my reviews, it shows that they genuinely interested in what I, as a reviewer, think of their writing and its not just an avenue to get reviews posted on sites such as Amazon, Goodreads etc.  It is great to know that the author appreciates your time in reading their book and it encourages you to keep on reviewing.  I even get a little excited when I know the author has read my review !!

Although I do think the author has to be gracious enough to accept the good and the bad reviews, there is no point in asking someone to read their book and completely disregard any negative feedback or even become annoyed at the reviewer.  If a reviewer feels it necessary to point out some negativity the author should see this in a positive way to understand how a reader might think and to take on board their views, as this is one of the few chances to hear the true thoughts of a reader.

Alternatively the same will go for a reviewer,  there are no courses or exams on how to review a book, therefore any feedback, good or bad, from the author should be considered and can only go towards  improving your reviews in the future.

I always give my honest opinion on the books I review and have been lucky enough, up to now, to enjoy all the ones I have currently read.  Some a lot more than others.  In fact one of the most important things I have learnt since I started to review is not to decline a book simply on its cover or genre.  This has happened a couple of times now, where normally I wouldn't have chosen the book and it has turned out to the one of the best books I have read, which then makes that book even more special and memorable.
