When I set out to write a book about one family member accidentally hurting another, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It was an accident. Absolutely. No question. The perpetrator was only seven at the time. There was never any question about his intent. Nor should there have been. In my mind it seemed simple enough. A minor part in a book about a guy who was once incredibly good looking and then…wasn’t.
As has happened many times during my career, I found myself inside a book that was going places completely unexpected. All these emotions, from every member of a family…Different emotions. Intense emotions. And a young man who was taking every single one of them upon himself. Wow. I had no idea what was going to happen – where the book would go. I didn’t know if the family would be obliterated by things that none of them could change and resultant feelings that none of them could help. I wanted so badly to help them. To get them to a happy ever after. I had no answers for them.
Thankfully Michael, my hero, didn’t give up on me. Or let me give up on his family. And Kacey…in her own unique way, helped bridge a gap I didn’t think could be bridged. It’s all about how badly you want love in your life. What sacrifices you’re willing to make to know that ultimate joy. And sometimes it’s just about having hope that that kind of love exists.
