This weekend at the NECAA Track and Field Championships at Gateshead Stadium

We spent both Saturday and Sunday this week over at Gateshead International Stadium to watch the North Eastern Counties Athletic Association Track and Field Championships for 2014.  Our eldest son was also taking part in the 1500m event on Saturday and the 800m on Sunday.  Both days were jam packed with lots of different events, so much going on.

As always, we arrived early and was blessed by a beautiful sunny day, although not ideal weather for athletes. I was especially looking forward to some of the field events like the Javelin, Pole Vault and Long Jump.

A brand new experience was in store which made him feel like a total professional , he had to warm up away from the track in the warm up arena next to the stadium and then had to register and was finally lead out onto the track by officials just before his race.

Just like all the other proud parents we watched his races nervously cheering him on.  We we're really pleased with both his runs and especially as he improved his 1500m personal best to 4 minutes 28.6 seconds. On the second day of events he was also cheered on by his 81 year old proud grandfather in his 800m race where he recorded a seasons best time of 2 minutes 08 .55 seconds.

The whole event was extremely well organised and the athletes could even have a sports massage which my son took advantage of, which really helped with his tired muscles.

Nike Miller Dri-Fit UV Long
Sleeve Running Top
Features Dri-Fit fabric to ensure you
are insulated and to help wick sweat away
from the body and keep you dry.
He continued trying out his new training kit from SportsShoes.com, his definite favourite item is the Nike Running Top with it being lightweigtht, it's really comfortable to wear.  Due to the breathable material it hasn't made him sweat and it is designed to protect against UV rays.

800m Ranking - 196
1500m Ranking - 217
3000 Ranking - 89

The Power of 10 mission has inspired and motivated improved standards of performance since its inception in 2006. The Power of 10 is instilling a real sense of purpose and value that has witnessed greater depth and higher standards in the vast majority of events across all age groups.

I remember when I was young (maybe 6?) going to Gateshead stadium to watch some athletics - I think it was international. The atmosphere was amazing!

  3. What a great weekend for you and your boys (young and old). As a mum of three boys, I have had the pleasure of a few Nationals Athletics tournaments (Southern) and there is nothing quite like seeing your children racing in a proper stadium! Glad you all had a good time.
