An accidental love . . .

When Jacqueline (Jax) Warren is in a serious motorcycle accident, firefighter Ryan Hudson is the first to arrive at the scene. Ryan takes a special interest in Jax particularly when he discovers that her stepmother—Jax’s only known contact—shows little interest in her wellbeing. But Jax learned early in life that she can’t rely on other people and it’s her six-year-old half-brother, Kyle, who’s the only person she cares about.

In the face of Ryan’s persistence and devotion, Jax begins to open up to him. Convincing her to spend Thanksgiving with him and his family—to prove to her that not all families are like the one she’d known—he presents her with a gift she never imagined, and she finally lets him into her life . . . and into her heart.

Guest Post from Kate James

I’ve loved reading as far back as I can remember. While I was in university, I decided I wanted to write. I started a couple of manuscripts, but I didn’t complete either one. It was many years later that I finally decided that I wanted to try again. I completed my first manuscript in six months while working full time, writing very early in the mornings and late at nights. It took me another six months to find a publisher. I entered into a contract with a small Canadian publisher. My debut, Silver Linings, did well and received first-place honors in both readers’ choice contest that I entered it in. As much as I enjoyed working with the publisher and I learned a lot, I decided to try to find a larger publisher for my subsequent books.

I was fortunate to meet Paula Eykelhof, Executive Editor, Single Titles, for Harlequin Enterprises, at a writers’ meeting. She gave me the opportunity to pitch to her. Some months later, she asked if I would be interested in writing for Heartwarming. She sent me several Heartwarming books, including Annie’s Neighborhood, by Roz Denny Fox, an author who I like and respect a great deal. My first contract was for two books: the award-winning A Child’s Christmas, and my May, 2015 release, The Truth About Hope. My most recent release is When the Right One Comes Along, the first book in my K-9 trilogy. The second and third books, When Love Matters Most and When the Sky’s the Limit, will be released in January and June 2016, respectively.

The Heartwarming series is for readers who enjoy well-written, deeply-nuanced stories that are clean and wholesome. I am pleased to have been invited to participate in this special Thanksgiving promotion. It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to our loyal readers and to introduce new readers to our stories. We hope you enjoy these thirteen short stories. Also, look for Heartwarming books in your local Walmart store starting January, 2016.

Kate spent much of her childhood abroad before attending university in Canada. She built a successful business career, but her passion has always been literature. Kate has been honored with numerous awards for her writing. She and her husband, Ken, enjoy traveling and the outdoors with their beloved Labrador Retrievers.

Gues Post from author Kate James

It's All About You!

I am frequently asked what made me decide to write. There is a multitude of talented authors out there and an ever-growing plethora of wonderful choices for readers in all genres. So why did I decide to leave a successful and enjoyable business career to write? The answer is simple. It's because of you, the reader!

I wanted to write from a relatively young age. I have two, half-finished manuscripts tucked away somewhere that date back to my days in university. I never finished them because life in the form of a family tragedy, school and career intervened. I was and remain a voracious reader, but writing became one of those things in the back of my mind: gosh, wouldn't it be fun if . . .!

A few years ago on a whim, while we were on vacation, I wrote a short story and entered it in a contest. To my shock and delight it was chosen as one of the top entries. My ever-intuitive husband realized that writing was—or could be—something important to me, and he gifted me a personal laptop for my birthday a couple months later. While outwardly appreciative, in my mind I was wondering why I needed another laptop, when I had a perfectly good one from work that was constantly with me anyway. Clearly my husband knew better than me because having a separate computer that didn't look and feel like my work computer was pivotal.

In six months—writing really early in the mornings and very late at night, to work around my "day job"—I produced my first manuscript. I was incredibly fortunate to have it picked up by a publisher. It was in print and in stores not much more than six months after that. It's called Silver Linings.

Kate James spent eight years of her childhood living in foreign countries as her professional parents travelled on business. She lived in four countries and spoke five languages before settling down in Canada again to attend university. After graduating with a degree in civil engineering, she held a variety of positions in the field of real estate development and operations, and ran three substantial organizations. While her writing during this period was mostly business related, including presentations and speeches she delivered both nationally and internationally, her passion is and always has been fiction.

Kate's business and personal experiences enable her to write fiction with a deep, often first-hand knowledge of what she is writing about. This approach makes Kate's stories richer and more vivid.

Kate’s goal is to entertain you with well-written, engaging stories, set in intriguing places and with strong, likeable characters. “I hope my stories bring you pleasure and entertain you. Nothing pleases me more than receiving feedback from people who have chosen to spend their valuable leisure time with one of my books,” notes Kate.

Kate married her husband, Ken, in an elegant, ocean-front wedding on a tropical island. When they are not traveling, they split their time between their properties in southern and central Ontario in Canada.
