Tides (Time of Myths: Shapeshifter Sagas)
by Natasha S Brown
NEW RELEASE...
It’s Leif’s eighth summer going viking with his father on their ship the Kraken—and he’s had enough. For as long as Leif can remember, his father has claimed to be a descendant of Ægir, god of the sea, and has exploited their shape changing ability—all this to amass enough gold to gain entrance into the ocean god’s halls. Leif hopes that time’s drawing near so he can free himself from Ragna’s domineering shadow. On the green hills of Éire, Eilish is content learning traditional folk cures from her father until a Finn-Gall raid disturbs the peace. Desperate to protect Eilish from harm, her father cuts her hair and disguises her in his old clothing before she’s ripped from the only home she’s ever known. Sold as a thrall in Duiblinn, she must hide out as a young man on a ship full of barbarians.
Now Eilish, who fears she’ll become Ægir’s next sacrifice, and Leif, who isn’t prepared to stand up against his father’s powerful wrath, must face the tides of change—no matter how ominous they may seem.

Our Book Review
Another spellbinding read from the Shapeshifter Sagas, having loved the first book, Scars, so much I couldn't wait to start this new story. The descriptions and research that has obviously been undertaken by the author brought this Viking story to life, at times I felt that I was actually seeing the story being played out in front of me rather than reading from the pages. The characters, good and bad, really stood out bringing out emotion as you followed them.
The authors writing, yet again, captured my imagination from the start as Eilish and her father were awoken by screams heard nearby and were forcibly taken and captured as slaves, or thralls as they were called, to be sold to the highest bidder at the slave market. Her fathers quick thinking knowing of the Viking reputation and desperate to keep his daughter as safe as she could possibly be, cut off her long hair into a shaggy boys cut and told her that her life depended on her being taken as a boy. Now harrowingly separated from her father Eilish caught the eye of Leif, the Viking son of Ragna, who felt sorry for the weak looking slave and was bought to be used as a deckhand on their ship, the Kraken, unbeknownst to him that she was actually a girl.
Leif lived almost as a prisoner himself under his fathers hatred who's only concern was to amass enough treasure to be accepted by AEgir, the god of the sea. His only worth to his father was his shapeshifting abilities while they were constantly at sea raiding. The question is will Eilish be able to keep her secret and stay alive under such gruelling conditions and vicious Viking captors and will Leif ever be free of his fathers invisible chains? How will fate play out for both of these loveable characters?
This is definitely an addictive series to read, each story so far has been completely different and I loved them both, highly anticipating the next book release!

Scars (Time of Myths: Shapeshifter Sagas Book 1)
Along the breathtaking and unforgiving coast of Snæland, Ásta’s ancestral farm is plagued with bad luck. The kinless maiden’s turf walls continue to be found damaged, and there aren’t enough farmhands to maintain the property. Claw marks in the dirt revive old memories of the wolf attack that left her scarred, and she begins to fear the whispers are true—that Fenrir, son of Loki and king of the wolves, has come to claim her and her land.
Torin often leaves his uncle’s farm in the southern hills to track and ensnare valuable gyrfalcons. His secret ability to turn into the birds he trains means his falconry skills are unparalleled, earning him precious silver and gold. If the ghosts of his past didn’t haunt him daily, pushing him to numb his senses with drink, Torin might have married by now—as his uncle often reminds him. He knows the time has finally come to find a wife and settle down.
During the Althing, the gathering of the year, Ásta’s ability to maintain her property comes into question while Torin wonders if a woman in jeopardy of losing her farm is really worth the trouble.

Sounds like a very interesting read. I'm waiting to see Eilish can keep her identity a secret. Also, rather she and Leif get together. My daughter is slowly getting me into these kinds of books.

ReplyDeleteHm...if I could shape shift, what would I become? I think I would want to be a hawk. I would love to soar high in the sky.
