A Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest
A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest is a no-holds-barred fantasy brawl. It begins when the God of Justice and Retribution opens The Abyss and unleashes a vengeful demon upon the mortal realm of Therra. Now it is up to scholar Penndarius Greyson and his tormented protector, martial artist Soren Luna Mortalitas, to stop a crisis that would send shockwaves through the very fabric of creation. In addition, Penndarius is waging an internal battle with a disembodied presence attempting to possess his mind. The two heroes must avoid death or capture, but there is a catch: They have only one day to solve a riddle older than history before a dark host of unstoppable demons is released into the world. The Divine Tempest includes warring factions, betrayal and redemption, and of course, Herrick Erickson-Brigl's trademark: epic fight scenes. This is the lean, hard-hitting first installment in a series that follows Penndarius’s growth as the avatar of the God of Creation and Soren’s reclamation of his lethal family’s humanity.Purchase A Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest on Amazon.
Guest Post from the Author
Hi
there,
This
is a post about Kai. She is a new addition to the book series. I made her
because I felt there weren't enough female characters. She is introduced as the
group's guide to the fertile land of Eden.
This
is a little about her:
Kai
was built to strengthen my female roster of characters. I really don't like
writing weak females. I believe a woman can be as strong as a man. Physically
women tend to be weaker. However, their strength lies in their adaptability and
their intuitiveness.
I
already have two main female characters.
The
first is Azlea who is a battle magus. She writes very bursty is the best way I
can describe it. Her abilities are explosive and that means she has to have her
own space in a fight.
Urielle
is a melee fighter like Soren. However her ability to forsee an opponent's
actions give her a deus ex machina feel. I don't want to overuse her because
that kind of feels like cheating. So I tend to write her sparingly and giver her
a "watcher" sort of feel. She only acts when she needs to and then steps back. I
like that and I don't want to change that.
That
meant I needed a real consistent female character I could put into combat that
could weave in with the guys: Soren and Craven.
Craven
is a big hulk of a fighter. He is basically insane. A black were-lion with dual
personality disorder. He operates as a bulldozer sort of character. I tend to
throw him at the bigger foes and then I get a battle of the titans kind of
fight; hulk vs hulk. That sort of thing.
Soren
is very much a solo fighter. His ability to adapt and move are really what make
him unique.
That
was when I ran into a conundrum. I really wanted Kai to be able to hang
alongside Soren in combat. As I mentioned, her main qualities would be
adaptability and intuitiveness. But then I ran into a problem. Soren tends to be
solo. That meant I had to create a character with her own skill set that could
work with him as an equal, but still retain her own uniqueness.
I
gave her a bag of tricks. She has a cape that has all manner of useful objects.
Each object operates as a special tool for a situation. Essentially I made a
combat handy "man". It had to be cool and crazy fun.
That
was not enough. Some of my friends whom I've talked to about her say that she is
one of my most creative characters yet. I did not stop at the bag of tricks. She
is cursed by the goddess Tief'iron who is the goddess of luck. She is cursed
with good luck and sucks the good luck from everyone around her. No one is safe.
Her entire family died. Now, she wears special gauntlets that keep the good luck
bottled up and that good luck continues to build. It has been kept hidden for
many years. So what happens when she takes them off? Her luck explodes! And the
exact opposite happens to those around her! Walking natural disaster baby! OH
YEAH! She is really an awesome character and I am excited to include her in my
second book.
