Deborah Garner is an accomplished travel writer with a passion for back roads and secret hideaways. Born and raised in California, she studied in France before returning to the U.S. to attend UCLA. After stints in graduate school and teaching, she attempted to clone herself for decades by founding and running a dance and performing arts center, designing and manufacturing clothing and accessories, and tackling both spreadsheets and display racks for corporate retail management. Her passions include photography, hiking and animal rescue. She speaks five languages, some substantially better than others. "If I could have any Christmas wish come true, it would be for every homeless pet to find a furever home. I wish I could see each one under the Christmas tree of a loving family, wearing a Santa hat that says "No Longer Abandoned."

Funniest Christmas Moment...
"There are many ways children might greet a Christmas morning. Tiptoeing through a quiet house to sneak a peek at presents. Or hearing cheerful holiday music flowing from speakers. One year, my father had other ideas. Still half asleep, our first waking thought was that a train was rumbling in the far off distance. Slightly more awake, we would realize it was coming closer. And closer. And closer! Surely it was now inside the house! We could hear the whistle! The walls were shaking! We jumped out of bed, covered our ears and ran down the hallway to see if the locomotive was charging through our living room. Rounding the corner, we found only our Christmas tree, sparkling with tiny lights, presents underneath. And my father, with a huge grin, holding up the cover of his favorite sound effects record."
