Guest Post from Tara Taylor Quinn
Rachel
Bloom Freelander, heroine in The Promise He Made Her is a genius. Seems kind of cheesy, writing something so obviously…pretentious. Through the years, there’ve been television shows with young male genuis’ – Doogie Howser, MD. Criminal Minds. Numbers. And now here I am bringing you a female genius, as though it’s some kind of hook.
It’s not. It’s a story straight from my heart. I raised a genius. I know down to my core, the challenges, the dangers, the aches you can’t fix because your child is different, because you can’t find a place where she fits in with everyone else. You can’t do anything but acknowledge to her that she’s not like everyone else because she’s already figured it out anyway. You can’t stay one step ahead of her. You can’t go to the ‘books’ and figure out how to raise her. And in the end, you are left feeling as though your best wasn’t good enough.
The first time my daughter’s mind frightened me was when she was about two. She was in the tub and trying to convince me to let her have chocolate for breakfast in this tiny baby talk. She had a baby doll in the tub with her because I used that doll to get this too smart little girl to do things. I would tell her she had to do it because Baby needed it. That morning, she turned it right back on me. She told me that Baby wanted chocolate for breakfast. Being so much smarter than she was because I was the parent, I told her, in a quite matter of fact tone to, “tell that baby that we don’t eat chocolate for breakfast.” At which point this baby held up her baby and said, “she doesn’t have any ears.” That tiny little human had known she’d outsmarted me and expected chocolate for breakfast because we couldn’t tell Baby no. We did not have chocolate that morning, I was still the parent. But I spent the next sixteen years determined to be up to the most precious job I’d been entrusted with. And having panic attacks…
Bloom, a successful psychiatrist, is a culmination of mistakes, and things I got right. She’s a woman who trusted the wrong person and was emotionally and mentally manipulated and abused. She’s a human being with a mind that sometimes sees far too much – and trusts too little. She’s a woman who’s learned that her mind doesn’t have all the answers and that sometimes she just has to listen to her heart.
And my daughter…she graduated with a degree in psychology, too, at 17, with me as her chaperone all those years on college campuses, and bringing her home with me every single night. Unlike, Bloom, my daughter went on to law school from there and is now a federal prosecutor giving birth to her own daughter this summer. Even in real life, happy endings are possible.
