The release of Once Upon A Friendship this
month marks my seventieth published novel with the Harlequin/MIRA/Harper
Collins team. When the publisher sent me
the list of my titles recently, telling me that I was at number 70 – a number
they consider a milestone – I took a quick glance. I knew I’d written close to seventy
books. But then a title caught my
eye. Not because of the particular
title. Or because of the particular
book. But because I’d written the book
years ago, saw the name, and got that rush feeling in my stomach that you get
on Facebook when you see that an old friend has found you.
I took a closer look at the list. As though compelled, I stopped on each
title. Had a visit. Re-lived memories with ‘friends’ that I hadn’t
thought about in a long time. Remembered
insights I’d gained from the lives of the people I wrote about. Feelings I’d felt.
It was a reunion of friends. A great one.
And it’s fitting that this book, Once Upon
A Friendship, marks the milestone and put that reunion into motion, because
this book is about Friendship. It’s
about three friends, two girls and a guy, who meet during a particularly
dramatic moment in the guy’s life. That
shared experience bonds them. They are
friends for life. Family to each
other. And then everything is threatened. The guy is going to jail. One of the girls is falling for him. And it’s up to the third friend to hold them
all together.
She might not be able to prevent jail
time. Or prevent heartache. But she definitely succeeds in keeping the
friendships intact. Because true
friendship is a matter of the heart. A
bond that goes beyond what happens to us in life. It’s inexplicable. And crucial.
And something any of us can find, at any
time in our lives. Regardless of
circumstance. Or place. It exists in war. In prison.
In church and home. In wealth and
in poverty. Friendship is always there
for us. We need only open ourselves up
to the bounty it has to share.
