The Dandy, launched in 1937, will publish its last issue on its 75th birthday on 4th December this year, following a huge fall in sales. The final issue will also include a copy of the very first issue.
The UK's longest-running children's comic, which
features the antics of cowboy strongman Desperate Dan, will only be available
online.
But publisher DC Thomson, which has seen the comic's circulation fall from
two million in the 1950s to under 8,000 today, said there are "exciting plans in
the pipeline" to take it in a "different direction". "Dan has certainly not
eaten his last cow pie," said chief executive Ellis Watson. "All of The Dandy's
characters are just 110 days away from a new lease of life."
A book celebrating the 75th anniversary of The Dandy was launched at the
Edinburgh International Book Festival this week and the comic will also feature
in exhibitions at the National Library of Scotland and the Cartoon Museum. A bronze statue of Desperate Dan stands in Dundee city centre, alongside Minnie
the Minx, from The Dandy's sister title The Beano.

Mixed feelings on this one..... It's always sad to see the end of an 'era' but it's a cool thing to see a new release in a new medium. There will be a whole generation ready to explore and experience this classic!
