Book Reviews - What Squirrels Do Trilogy by Hazel Nutt plus special Easter Signed Give Away

Book Review - “WHAT SQUIRRELS DO” TRILOGY
Written and Illustrated by Hazel Nutt

WHAT SQUIRRELS DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT LOOKING

What Squirrels Do When You’re Not Looking is Book One in the What Squirrels Do series.

Just what do squirrels do when you are not looking? This picture book takes a funny look at answers to questions like:

  • What would happen if squirrels didn’t pee or poo?
  • What happens if squirrels don’t get enough nuts?
  • How do squirrels say ‘hi’?

  • Also you can bet that squirrels having something to do with Why car alarms go off in the middle of the night!

What Squirrels Do When You are Not Looking is available from:
    Kindle (Amazon.co.uk)

    Our Book Review
A wonderful way to introduce your child in to the aspects of nature and wildlife.  The book describes the world of the squirrel in a fun and humorous way that children will easily understand, really enjoy and have a giggle at, I did!  Large bright coloured pictures really tell the story and are set against the short rhyming text.  A great way for children to realise what fun reading can be and encourage them to continue as well as venturing outside on the odd nature exploration.

WHAT SQUIRRELS DO: THE SQUIRREL OLYMPICS

What Squirrels Do: The Squirrel Olympics is Book Two in the “What Squirrels Do” Series.

The Squirrel Olympics happen almost everyday at a wood near you and even on the washing line in your garden.

This childrens’ picture book takes a funny look at Olympic events that squirrels could do. There are traditional events that humans do and a few extra fun ones thrown into the mix to make it thoroughly entertaining and surprising.

After reading this book, you’ll never look at squirrels in the same way again! Every time you spot one you’ll be trying to decide which squirrel Olympic event they might be in the middle of!

What Squirrels Do: The Squirrel Olympics is available from:
    CreateSpace eStore
    Amazon
    Amazon.co.uk
    Kindle (Amazon.com)
    Kindle (Amazon.co.uk)

    Our Book Review
The author continues to show the fun and humour of squirrels life's in another imaginative rhyming book.  This time very cleverly describing different Olympic events that the squirrels participate in, enhanced with large lovely coloured pictures.  My favourite events had to be the squirrels limbo dancing and the tightrope walking over neighbours washing lines due to the delightful pictures. An enjoyable book bringing nature and wildlife into a child's life.

WHAT SQUIRRELS DO: JUST FOR FUN

What Squirrels Do: Just For Fun is Book Three in the “What Squirrels Do” Series.

Squirrels are cheeky, mischievous creatures and get up to all sorts (just like children). This book shows you some of the entertaining antics squirrels like to do, just for fun.

What do they like to do to us humans, just for fun?

What happens when they start chatting to swans?

Just a couple of intriguing questions for you – now get the book to find out the answers!

This beautifully illustrated fun rhyming book is great to read with your child and you will enjoy it as well, making it become a firm favorite in your household.

This book gets the imagination going, as well as encouraging nature walks, where you can try and catch squirrels doing the fun antics described in this book. Or maybe you can come up with more antics that squirrels (or other animals) can do just for fun.

What Squirrels Do: Just For Fun, is available from:
    Kindle (Amazon.co.uk)

    Our Book Review
This book introduces the author, Hazel Nutt, to the young readers as she shares what squirrels like to do for fun to keep themselves entertained.  Another book full of fun and humour that children will love, especially the part where the squirrels use the flowers as pom poms!  A great way to get children thinking more about the joy of nature and wildlife and a good way to get their imaginations working.

    About the Author
Hazel Nutt is a toddler who loves nature, especially squirrels, who she often has a good natter with, which is how all these imaginative (could possibly be true) facts have come to light. They tell her their secrets and her parents help her to write them down to share with the world. Loving nature is really important to her and she hopes to make sure that lots of other kids love nature as well.

SIGNED BOOK Giveaway - Dog-Ma the Zen of Slobber by Barbara Boswell Brunner - 5 WINNERS !!

This fabulous giveaway is brought to you by
5 Lucky winners will each receive a Signed Book from the author.
    Open US/CA or ebook Worldwide
Ending on Sunday 14th April at 11.59pm EST

Barbara's vivid and dramatic stories, told with a wicked sense of humor, will make you laugh out loud. She definitely gets what living with rescued dogs (nine of them!) is all about. This book will inspire you with the couple's unstinting love, devotion, and respect for dogs as family members. You'll be glad to include it in your treasured collection of great dog books.

When Barbara meets her future husband, Ray, it is love-and dog-at first sight. Over the course of thirty-two years, seventeen relocations and nine dogs, their mutual love of dogs guides them on their unconventional path. The love that Barbara and Ray get in return is literally lifesaving, with one dog attacking a lethal intruder and another discovering Barbara’s cancer. Her own survival story underscores the story of how her dogs become survivors themselves.

Each new dog adds its own dynamic to the family, sometimes upending it. From Turbo (whose Spock-like ears may have provided super powers), Barbara learns about the will to live; Lexington demonstrates incredible patience and an inexplicable love of golf; Madison teaches that laughter is truly the best medicine and that the whole “nine lives thing” is not reserved just for cats; Morgan should be sainted for tolerating Izzy, who is as cute as she is bad. Barbara is certain that somewhere in doggie heaven there is a poster that says “If you are sick, injured or in need of really expensive medical care, FIND THESE HUMANS!”

Book Excerpt from Sworn to Secrecy by Tammie Clarke Gibbs

The much anticipated new time travel romance by the author of the #1 Kindle Gothic/Time Travel Romance, ISLAND OF SECRETS.

Their arrival was foretold in a journal and protected by one family for generations.

The time has come and one woman will succeed or fail -

She'll have to help to fulfill the past, but they'll have to protect her future.

Dak Bartholomew is a US Secret Service agent. When he wakes up locked in a dark room, it's just another day until he realizes that he's not alone.  Protecting the woman covered in dirt comes natural, but the feelings she stirs inside him are anything but ordinary.

Elizabeth Porter would like nothing more than to plunge her knife through the stranger's heart for all the trouble he's caused, but he doesn't seem nearly as bad as they said he was.  When he looks at her, she fears her heart is the one in danger. .

Together they'll take an unexpected journey to a time and place they could never have imagined and discover a secret they'll be sworn to protect.

An unlikely alliance...a love born from the ashes of adversity....but will it be enough to preserve the past and guarantee their future?
    Excerpt from Sworn to Secrecy
Dak Bartholomew felt a trickle of blood run a cold wet trail down the side of his face from the open gash at his temple.
He struggled to open his eyes, and after several moments succeeded. Focusing on his surroundings took several more, but eventually, he could see the small, dank-smelling room in more clarity than he even desired.
The only light came from a single window, its pane’s blackened all but for one small section.
He pulled himself off the filthy mattress and felt his way toward the light. The window had been painted from the inside, and it appeared that someone had literally scratched at it until a small stream of light was allowed in from the outside. Instinctively, he reached into his pocket for his knife, but it wasn’t there. Nothing was there.
There was a faint cry from the corner of the room. Startled, Dak stepped back into the darkness.
He felt his way along the bed until he came to what he thought was a wall.
The darkness was deep and black, and the light cut only a sliver through it, leaving the rest of the room engulfed in an ebony sea.
He was weak from having been drugged or loss of blood. He wasn’t sure which. Either would have given him an excuse to forget he wasn’t alone and cower, but the pitiful whimpers stoked within him a steely determination.
“You there,” he called and waited for an answer.
The room was quiet in response. No whimpering. No breathing.
“Are you hurt?” Dak asked this time, and his voice was softer. Still there was no answer.
He took several short steps, feeling his way along the wall in the direction he’d heard the sounds coming from.
“I won’t hurt you,” he said, this time louder. “I…”
Dak felt a dirty hand on his mouth and something sharp at his side.
His body went rigid. He tried to say something, but the hand clamped tighter against his mouth.

    Book Description
A late 21st century time traveler battles bards, druids, warrior queens, and Roman cohorts for survival during the Celtic rebellion against the Romans in Britannia, 60 AD.

Time traveler John Moore’s fate is determined by four women: the Celtic warrior queen Boudicca; Tailtu, a gentle slave purchased from another clan; Dr. Eleanor Roberts, a severe, jealous and brilliant woman who spearheads the time travel mission; and enigmatic Dr. Cheyenne L’esperance, herself a time traveler from an even more distant future. Moore’s mission to survive three battles against the Roman legions coincides with survival tactics and backstabbing in the modern government department. The savage past clashes swords with the desperate future in a time continuum of treachery.

Dr. Eleanor Roberts is Moore’s chief antagonist, but reluctant ally. They are both concerned about being sold out for the ultimate military use of the Time Dimension Study. Dr. Roberts and Moore are joined in the mission by Dr. Ford, an historian more interested in self preservation than preserving history. Dr. Ford and Dr. Roberts are romantically involved, but Dr. Cheyenne L’esperance, a mysterious newcomer to the agency, turns their union into a triangle.

Moore encounters Cailte, a warrior bard of Boudicca’s tribe, and Taliesin, a druid acolyte. They are his sponsors into Boudicca’s inner circle. He meets Nemain, the high druid priest, jealous of his position and power, willing to kill to keep it. Dubh is a clan chieftain, of boundless energy and bloodlust. Cailte’s servants include a woman whom Moore grows to love, and a boy, both taken as slaves from other tribes. They become his surrogate family. When Romans burn Boudicca’s village, whip her like a criminal and rape her daughters, her retaliation on Roman settlements drags John Moore into a whirlpool of revenge that echoes through the centuries, and from which only the bitter partnership of Dr. Roberts and Dr. L’Esperance can save him.

    Our Book Review
An intriguing and a refreshing change, a novel about time travel both from the future and into the past.

When John Moore wins the contest to be the subject of the trial he is transported back into the time of Boudicca.  Whilst he is on his mission a stranger appears in the research facility which sent John on his mission but who is she?  And what is her role ?

The author has shown a lot of research throughout the story, the descriptions of how the people lived, traveled and most of all survived is first rate .

Whilst John Moore is on his mission the emotions and stress that are felt back in the lab, as well as the tension between the researchers and the directors on the outcome of the mission which will affect future funding, is excellent and truly believable.

The narrative is fast paced, full of excitement and adventure, which keeps the reader enrapt .

As John Moore is transported back in time the excellent descriptions make you feel that you are sat right beside him taking everything on board and traveling alongside him on his journey .

The characters that he meets are brought to life excellently and the roles and status that their hold in their lifetime are accurately portrayed .

This is the second book that I have read by this particularly author, both being totally different but the author style of writing involves and hooks the reader from page one.

    Book Excerpt

I swiveled my head back and up, looking into a pair of deep blue eyes.  For a moment, I felt oddly off-kilter, as though someone had tilted the house and I couldn’t quite stay on my feet.  Michael shifted me slightly so that I was leaning against his chest, his arm secure around my waist and his hand still holding mine.

“Hello, Cathryn,” he said, and I remembered.  Cathryn Whitmore had been a teaching assistant for one of Michael’s classes last year.  We had met very briefly at the homecoming dance, right before my life began to unravel.

“Michael.”  Those perfect lips curved into a warm smile, and she reached out a graceful hand to touch his arm.  “I was hoping to see you tonight.”

“What are you doing here?” The amazement in his voice made the comment less rude than it might have sounded.  Clearly he was as surprised to see her as I was.

Her smiled deepened, and impulsively I dropped my mental block and reached toward her mind.  The roar of white noise made me hiss in pain, and I hunched my shoulders against the onslaught.

Michael glanced down at me with concern.  I shook my head slightly.  Cathryn didn’t acknowledge me at all.

“I changed my mind about the research job.  I was all set to leave, to move to Atlanta, when the alumni association offered me the liason position. I’m doing a little work for Dr. Sorrel, too.  That’s partly why I’m here tonight.”

“That’s good.”  He brushed his lips lightly over my hair.  “Cathryn, you remember Tasmyn?  You met last year.”

Finally Cathryn dropped her eyes to mine.  The warmth there for Michael clearly didn’t extend to me, but she managed a fairly cordial nod.

“And what are you doing up here, Tasmyn?  I thought you were still in high school.” The subtle challenge beneath the snide comment didn’t escape my notice.

I pasted on a smile that was just as insincere as hers.  “I graduated last May.  I’m a freshman here at Perriman."

“Really.”  Cathryn was able to imbue that one word with an amazing combination of condensation and dismissal.  “How nice for you.” She turned her attention back to Michael.  “I was hoping maybe you would help with some of my work for Dr. Sorrel.  I could use a really fabulous assistant, and you remember how well we work together.

Being ignored was one thing, but having a gorgeous older woman flirt outrageously with my boyfriend while I stood right in front of him was too much for me.  Before I could control it, a flare of fury shot out, and a crystal candy dish on the end table next to me flew into the air and shattered against the wall.
