Book Review - The Tragedy of Fidel Castro by João Cerqueira

Book Review
The Tragedy of Fidel Castro
by João Cerqueira

About the Author
João Cerqueira was born in Portugal in 1964 and lives in Viana do Castelo. He has a PhD in art history from the University of Oporto.  He had four year research sponsorship grant awarded by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), within the field of history of art. He covered the Porto 2001 European Capital of Culture for Arte Ibérica magazine.

João is the author of seven books, including the novels Blame It on Too Much Freedom, Devil's Observations, and The Tragedy of Fidel Castro, and the nonfiction books Art and Literature in the Spanish Civil War (published in Portugal and Brazil), Maria Pia: Queen and Woman, José de Guimarães (published in China by the Today Art Museum), and José de Guimarães: Public Art.  His novels satirize modern society and use irony and humor to provoke reflection and controversy.

Book Description
When God receives a request from Fátima to help prevent a war between Fidel Castro and JFK, he asks his son, Jesus, to return to Earth and diffuse the conflict. On his island, Fidel Castro faces protests on the streets and realizes that he is about to be overthrown. Alone, surrounded, and aware that the end is fast approaching, he plays his last card. Meanwhile, Christ arrives on Earth and teams up with Fátima, who is convinced she can create a miracle to avoid the final battle between JFK and Fidel Castro and save the world as we know it. At the end, something really extraordinary happens!

Humorous, rich with metaphor, and refreshingly imaginative, The Tragedy of Fidel Castro was chosen as the book-of-the-month and book-of-the-year by Os Meus Livros magazine.

Our Book Review
This is one of them books, for me personally, that I realised as soon as I read the prologue that the book was on one of my favourite subject areas and if it was as good as I thought it was going to be that I wouldn't want it to finish and be left wanting more

Even though the author states in his prologue that his characters are not the real, JFK, Fidel Castro God and God's son Jesus, I think this is the author sense of humour which is strongly evident throughout, it's hard not to relate the characters to the real people.

In order to prevent conflict between JFK and Castro God sends his son to earth to solve it.

The author's knowledge and research shines through the characters and the way they think.  A struggle of ideologies of two different people who wanted to achieve the same goal for the best of their people, one through a dictatorship and the other through democracy.

This booked had me hooked from page one, the descriptions and thoughts of the characters give the readers real food for thought .The author uses very clever examples of how one mans actions
can make you think about your beliefs and are they the right or can you change them for the better.

As the story developed the writers humour really comes through on a par with Tom Sharpe .The author places Castro in some excellent situations which both challenge and explain his reasoning and beliefs.

This is an excellent and enthralling read and I really hope that I can obtain or purchase the authors other publications.

Alone on the Ice gives Antarctic Explorer Sir Douglas Mawson his due

In the annals of heroic Antarctic exploration the names of Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen have all become immortalised in books and movies.

But now American author David Roberts is seeking to resurrect the achievements of a much lesser known Yorkshire-born explorer, Sir Douglas Mawson, whose exploits in the frozen southern continent could be said to match, or even better, those of his more famous contemporaries.
Mawson, whose family left for Australia when he was two, made several trips to the Antarctic, braving conditions and dangers every bit as dangerous as his rival explorers. But his trips also involved more exploration and – crucially – provided more valuable information for scientists than his rivals.

Roberts's book, Alone on the Ice, tells Mawson's remarkable story, including his joining the first expedition to ascend Mount Erebus – a giant active volcano in Antarctica. It also tells how Mawson was among the first to discover what was then thought to be the position of the magnetic south pole, rather than the geographic south pole that was the focus of more attention but less scientifically important.

Roberts believes that Mawson is so little known for two reasons. First, he was Australian, and the British press of the time was far more interested in homegrown imperial heroes such as Scott. And second, Mawson shunned the exciting race to the south pole that had captured the public imagination in favour of actual science. "The three way race between Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen was a story for the masses. But it was a lot harder to do what Mawson wanted to do," Roberts said.

Yet Mawson's exploits and travails, chronicled in horrifying detail in Roberts's book, are the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters. Mawson and his colleagues were so starved they regularly shot and ate their huskies, feeding the remaining dogs with some of the meat. Icebergs are dodged, crevasses crawled over, blizzards sheltered from, and astonishing feats of endurance performed with stiff upper lips all round, partly from the crippling frostbite.

At the heart of the book is Mawson's Australasian Antarctic expedition, which lasted from 1911 to 1914. The huge expedition, unlike the focused attempts to reach the south pole, saw numerous teams of explorers establish three permanent bases in which to survive a terrible, dark, permanently stormy winter. Then, with warmer weather, they fanned out over a vast area of unexplored land. Mawson, with Swiss skier Xavier Mertz and army officer Belgrave Ninnis, headed out from a base camp at Commonwealth Bay into the vast, empty wilderness.

Disaster turned the return journey into one of the most stunning – yet little known – stories of survival in all Antarctic exploration. As they traversed snowy ice fields with sledges pulled by dogs, Ninnis and his sledge plunged into a crevasse. Not only was he dead, but his sledge carried the team's tent and most of their food. Mawson and Mertz faced a desperate rush back to base without a proper tent, in the face of howling gales and with only tiny amounts of food. It was an appalling journey, with the huskies becoming a source of food as well as a way to pull the sleds – a tactic that had diminishing returns as each dog was devoured.

Desperately weak and suffering from ailments that included skin peeling off, hair loss and frostbite, Mawson and Mertz were delayed by the weather which forced them to spend days in a makeshift shelter. Mertz became weak and delirious, forcing them to halt as a deadline for the expedition's ship to meet them at Commonwealth Bay loomed. But as Mertz lay dying, Mawson refused to leave him, risking his own survival. "His loyalty to Mertz was extreme. He stays with him to the very end," Roberts said.

But Metz's death, as Mawson continued his mission alone in the huge emptiness of Antarctica, was not the lowest point of the trek. Mawson plunged through the snow over a crevasse and ended up hanging by a rope after his sledge became wedged in the snow. Starving by this point, his diary revealed that his main emotion was not fear of imminent death, but anger that he would die without gorging himself on the food remaining on his sledge. He hauled himself back up twice after the snow edge collapsed under his weight. For Roberts, Mawson's mental fortitude was more remarkable than his physical strength. "He was immensely mentally tough," he said.

Mawson made it back to the camp hours after the expedition boat had departed. He had to endure another Antarctic winter with the men the ship left behind before it could return. But at least they had a radio mast working and Mawson sent a radio message to his long-suffering fiancée, Paquita Delprat, back in Australia. Having suffered unimaginable loneliness and physical deprivation and the loss of two friends, the message began with an understatement worthy of any imperial hero: "Deeply regret delay only just managed to reach hut."

Book Description

His two companions dead, food and supplies vanished in a crevasse, Douglas Mawson was still one hundred miles from camp.

On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Douglas Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp. The dogs were gone. Now Mawson himself plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface.

Mawson was sometimes reduced to crawling, and one night he discovered that the soles of his feet had completely detached from the flesh beneath. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizably skeletal, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, “Which one are you?”

This thrilling and almost unbelievable account establishes Mawson in his rightful place as one of the greatest polar explorers and expedition leaders. It is illustrated by a trove of Frank Hurley’s famous Antarctic photographs, many never before published in the United States. 24 pages of illustrations.

Book Review - Gold by Thomas Hollyday

Book Review
Gold
Gold - a novel
by Thomas Hollyday

About the Author
Thomas Hollyday was born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1942.
Thomas Hollyday (1942-present) was born in Easton, Maryland. His father was an acclaimed photographer and his mother a brilliant teacher.  He grew up in the southern atmosphere of the Eastern Shore with its maritime and military heritage.  He studied writing with Elliott Coleman at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars and with C.Michael Curtis of the Atlantic Monthly.  He served with distinction in Vietnam and became a successful international businessman.  He also drew illustrations for national magazines and published maritime and Civil War history.

He currently edits the Wet Their Whistles newsletter for animal water rights (solarsippers.com). He draws the popular humorous Animal Viewpoint Cartoons for newspapers. He continues to please his fans with new novels in his River Sunday Romance Mysteries collection. In his fiction he describes his recurring theme that human settlers since prehistoric times in the Chesapeake region have left a mist of legend and history that permeates its modern stories with a certain compelling truth.

Book Description
John Neale is throwing in the towel. He has followed his concience for too long, working for pennies to support local farmers in the quiet Chesapeake town of River Sunday. With his own bills mounting, he is doing one last job before selling out to the corporate life. He just needs to finalize the will of Father Tom, a beloved priest who passed away while performing a mass.

To the town''s surprise, it seems that Father Tom had access to gold - to the tune of millions of dollars. None can figure out where the stash of precious metal was coming from, or how many millions still remained. A modern day gold rush ensues, with prospectors descending on the town from all corners of the world. John struggles to fend off the enthusiastic claims of the church as well as the scrabbling efforts of neighbors while making his own furious explorations of the brush-encrusted fishing property Father Tom maintained.

When a Native American burial mound presents evidence of a history tracing back far more than local tribes could account for, John realizes the significance of his discovery could go far beyond monetary wealth. His world enters the realm of science fiction, and he races to stay one step ahead of death in his efforts to share the truth with the world.

Our Review
The story revolves around the death of a priest, who has been sending funds to have a cathedral rebuilt, no one knows where the money has come from, on entrusting his legacy to a local lawyer John neale to execute his wishes.  During his investigation a trail of murder and a treasure hunt ensue with a historic relevance to where the alleged treasure is resting.

The storyline will have you hooked from page one, the novel takes us along the path of a hidden treasure and the thrill and excitement of trying to locate it.  The language, text and short chapters give the reader plenty of time to digest the storyline.   The characters are excellently portrayed and you feel you are beside them and want to offer them your help.

The novel has several twists and turns which keep the reader guessing.  This is the third novel I have read by this author and hope to read any further work he publishes.

The author adds to the novel with the research he has done into the Native American tribe along with Inca and Mayan traditions.

As in all good tales good verses bad who will triumph.  When or if the treasure is found who will reap the rewards.   If you like a book with mystery, murder and history this is the perfect read for you.

Guest Post by author of Heart Of The Ocean, Heather B Moore plus $25 Gift Card Give Away

Tour Schedule
Guest Post - Starting Your Book
by author of Heart Of The Ocean, Heather B Moore

When I meet writers who are looking to get published, they often ask me how I decide where to start my story, who the characters will be, and how I plot.

So as I’m preparing to write my next book, I thought I’d give you some insight into my process.

1. Thinking. Maybe mulling is the more correct word. I have to have the main character pretty well defined in my mind before starting to write. The secondary characters come into the story to support the main character—and sometimes they surprise even me.

2. Creating a schedule. Writing, of course, is not always controlled by that effervescent muse. Writing is part creativity, and part science. Editing definitely falls into the science category, as well as actually completing a book. Like any writer, I’m constantly pulled in different directions. But once I decide on a story idea, I need to create the schedule to get it completed, and limit any other stories in my head that are trying to derail priority number 1. For example, if I decide to turn in a book on December 1st to my publisher and I start on August 1st, I divide the word count by the number of writing days. And I leave a couple of weeks in for editing. August: 25,000 words (average 1,000 words a day, 5 days/week). September: 25,000 words, October: 25,000 words, November: 10,000 (2 weeks), 2 weeks of edits.

3. Character sketching. This is an evolving process and changes and grows as I get further into the writing process. For instance, when I write my first draft, my character motivations aren’t usually ironed out. I’m writing mostly plot and dialog. About half-way through draft 1, I’ve had to make solid decisions about my characters, so I’m adding information to my character sketches as I go. So during the 2nd draft, I’m inserting more characterization to the beginning of the book.

4. Point of view & tense: I take into consideration who my audience will be and who the most important characters are. Will the story happen in real time (present tense) or past tense? Will my characters speak in first person (ideal for YA), or third person? It’s a lot of work to change this part of the process, so doing your research beforehand will save you a lot of time later.

5. Conflict. This goes hand in hand with character sketching. I have to ask myself what is the main conflict of the book, and of each character.

6. Beginning. Now that I have some basics going and I actually sit down to write, I usually concentrate on where I want the story to begin. Not to say that the first chapter I write will be the actual first chapter of the book, but I start pretty near the beginning. Before I start a chapter/scene, I ask myself: “What is the point of the chapter? What will be accomplished? What will it show that may/may not be relevant to the story as a whole?”

7. Creating a scene. I create scenes in several phases. Phase 1: writing and not caring too much about “fleshing out” the characters or the description, but I am nailing down the direction of the scene. Phase 2: revising the scene and inserting more description, making more concrete decisions about the character. Phase 3: this will happen when the whole book is drafted and maybe new developments have happened along the way. So I now have to go back through each scene to make sure the story is properly directed. As you can see, creativity has just been replaced by careful analysis (science).

Okay, looking over this list makes me wonder why I even start a new book. Every writer has what works for them. My style might be convoluted, but you never know, it might work for you as well.

Heart of the Ocean
by Heather B. Moore

A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost  . . . a handsome stranger  . . .
What more could Eliza Robinson want?
Except for maybe her life.

In Heather B. Moore’s enthralling 1840’s historical romance, Heart of the Ocean, Eliza Robinson has turned down the very pretentious Mr. Thomas Beesley’s marriage proposal. As a business partner of Eliza’s father, Thomas quickly discredits the family and brings disgrace to the Robinson name.

While her father scrambles to restore his good name in New York City, Eliza flees to the remote Puritan town of Maybrook to stay with her Aunt Maeve. Although relieved to be away from all- things-male and unforgiving gossip columns, odd things start to happen to Eliza, and she is plagued by a ghostly voice. Her aunt’s explanation? That Eliza is being haunted by a woman who died of a broken heart twenty years ago.

After Aunt Maeve is tragically killed, Eliza's life is put in danger as she tries to uncover the mystery of her aunt's death. She encounters Jonathan Porter in Maybrook, whose presence in the town seems suspicious, yet she finds herself drawn to him. When she discovers that Jonathan’s dark secrets may be the link between the dead woman who haunts her and her aunt’s murderer, Eliza realizes that Jonathan is the one man she should never trust.

Our Family Movie Night - working on my new year resolutions #boots #cbias

Keeping to my new year resolutions (posted previously) have been easier than I thought until last week when I returned to working evenings again.   I have really been taking time out to spend more time with the boys as planned, the 'me' time needs to be improved on, although I didn't expect it all to change overnight.  Working evenings is hard when you have children but we are determined not to let it get in the way of family time, so we decided that on my night off last week we were going to have a family movie night.  There is nothing better than all of us together being huddled around the television with our blankets and snacks.

The boy's priority was, of course, the snack menu, quickly followed by the movie choice!  So they grabbed a pen and piece of paper and wrote the shopping list for 'mum' to buy.  When I read the list it made me giggle to see Coca-Cola with 'GLASS BOTTLES' written beside it.  Growing up you could always buy the glass bottles of Coca-Cola but now they seem harder to find in the UK, so when we do see them we make them our special little treat and this has obviously been passed on to the boys way of thinking.  The movie choice was easy Scooby Doo - Abracadabra-Doo and, believe it or not, their favourite Zulu Dawn which they must have watched at least ten times now.

So on my way to work, in our UK snowy weather, I grabbed my shopping list and popped into our Boots store to stock up as I was already heading there to stock up on toiletries and could easily combine the two to save time.  Again Boots have been around since I was little, it's a store that I feel that I can trust and depend on, whenever I need shopping for medicines/toiletries etc I always head there, knowing that if I do need any help or advice there is always staff who will gladly help. With so many shops closing down it's great to have these well known traditional shops still around and I try to support them as often as I can.

I headed nervously over to the beverages section not knowing if they would have the boys treasured glass bottles of Coca-Cola or not .....they only had the plastic bottles but the same shape so hopefully that will be ok with them, fingers crossed.  Nice to see that it was also on special offer, well timed shopping trip.  When we do our normal weekly food shopping we tend to buy cheaper brands of food and pop, which is why I think we really appreciate the real taste of Coca-Cola on these special occasions, there's nothing like it.  I was pleasantly surprised at how well stocked the snacks and beverages were, although I couldn't find the children's sugar free sweets today, usually they are always to hand.  It would have been great to have seen a few family sized packet of crisps for sale as it's a good way to save money.

Another pleasant surprise at the end of the shopping trip, two discount vouchers, one for No7 make-up or skincare and the other for £10 off an eye-check.  Not bad for a small shopping trip, obviously I had to check out the No7 section to see what my next purchase was going to be and found out that it was also on a 3 for 2 special offer.  I saved quite a lot of money at the store over Christmas as well, when all their gift sets were on the 3 for 2 offer plus there was a huge selection to choose from.

All stocked up and now time for our family movie night, it is great to spend quality time together and I know the boys really enjoy our movie nights.  Our youngest made sure he was first at hand to carry in the goodies, followed by his older brother, while mum and dad were left to carry in the fleecy blankets, as always.  Goodies sorted and drinks poured as we sit back and enjoy the movies and our time together as a family.  As you can see, the boys seem to have forgiven us for the plastic bottles!
