Book Description
Every Natural Fact: Five Seasons of Open-Air Parenting is a narrative of mother-and-son nature outings across the state of Wisconsin. In a style that blends the voices of Janisse Ray and Annie Dillard, a mother and son explore parallels in the world of people and nature. The interconnected chapters stand on their own and build upon each other. These explorations of natural history, flora and fauna, and parenting themes demonstrate that the mythic thread that winds through everything can still be found, even in a world of wounds. Amy Lou Jenkins' award-winning writing is rich in sensory immediacy, characterization, natural history, and humor.
Book Review
If you love wildlife and nature then this is the book for you.  Filled with the beauty of nature the authors writing takes you on a journey around the wild Wisconsin region.  Together with her son, DJ, they go on outings exploring the natural country, building a unique bond between mother and son.  A relationship that is becoming increasingly hard as her adolescent son is on the brink of growing up, the author tries to capture the last moments of childhood together.

The book is full of detailed nature writing with some really informative historical facts on the region they are visiting and some sadness of how over the years humans have altered the natural course of the habitat.

I especially enjoyed the humorous stories from old aunts and uncles as they attempt to keep them alive with the new generation by enjoying close family times, ensuring that the stories are not lost forever.  I also loved the chapter on the eagles and at one particular point when the author suddenly stopped her car, with excitement, at the spotting of one as she was driving, something we have done many times!!

The book is a lovely refreshing read, at first I felt as it was jumping needlessly between subjects, it highlights the need to make the most of childhood and nature, enjoying what the natural world has to offer.

Creative Writing Hop

Karma Media's Creative Writing Hop
The idea behind the creative writing hop is breathe new life into a passion that is quickly becoming a long lost art. Writing allows us to express ourselves without the fear of judgment that comes when we speak aloud. So whether you create a journal at home, run a blog, or are just looking to write this hop will be for you. The main goal is to write with a secondary goal to improve or hone our skills.

Each month a new topic, prompt or idea will be expressed and it will be up to each individual to find a creative way to write it down, and if they like they may also share it. All types of writing styles and themes are accepted, however, we ask that it be kept family friendly (PG-13). Write a poem, share a story, write a work of fiction, or anything your heart desires.

Keep in mind you don't need to be a blogger to link up, but it makes it easier.

General Rules:
1) Please link your post to the main pages:
 http://www.literarysweet.com and http://www.karmamediateam.com
2) Visit other creative writers. This is an honor system, but in order to keep the hop up we need to attempt to visit each other, and check out each others work.
3) Commenting is not mandatory, but strongly encouraged.
4) Constructive criticism is allowed, but no slander or flaming. Doing so will get you removed from the hop.

If during your visit, you enjoyed their work or blog, consider following them.

We are always looking for suggestions on new topics or how to improve. If you would like to suggest either please use this form.

Each month I would love to feature a writer from previous month's hop, so if this interests you go ahead and link up.

This month our idea will be spring.

Whispering willows and cat's tails climb

Dutch writer Guus Kuijer wins £467,000 children's fiction prize

Guus Kuijer, winner of the 2012 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for children’s literature, wrote Het Boek Van Alle Dingen - The Book of Everything - in 2005.
Guus Kuijer has won the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for children’s literature.

The 69-year-old Dutch writer has written more than 30 books since making his debut in 1975 and collects five million Swedish kronor (£467,000) for the award - the richest prize in children's fiction.

The prize is for a body of work "in the spirit" of Pippi Longstocking creator Astrid Lindgren (who died in 2002 aged 94) and previous winners include Philip Pullman, Maurice Sendak and Shaun Tan, the 2011 winner.

In its citation, the 12-strong Swedish jury wrote: “Respect for children is as self-evident in his works as his rejection of intolerance and oppression. Kuijer combines serious subject matter and razor-sharp realism with warmth, subtle humor and visionary flights of fancy. He consistently conveys a message of tolerance, understanding and broad-mindedness."

Kuijer's books - including Florian Knol - have been translated into more than 10 languages. He has previously won the German Children’s Literature Award and the Dutch National Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature.

Wimpy Kid finds some love is in the air in book seven

Wimpy Kid book seven teaser
teaser image for the seventh book in Jeff Kinney's Wimpy Kid series

Romance is set to enter the world of Wimpy Kid Greg Heffley in the latest instalment of Jeff Kinney's smash hit series, which is due out in November.

The illustrated Wimpy Kid books, peppered with handwritten notes and cartoon illustrations, trace the daily trials and tribulations of computer game nerd Greg. The first novel, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, was voted best children's book of the decade by Blue Peter viewers earlier this month [http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/mar/01/wimpy-kid-harry-potter-blue-peter-poll], beating Harry Potter, while the sixth novel in the series, Cabin Fever, was the bestselling children's book of 2011 in the UK, spending eight weeks at number one and selling one copy every four seconds in its first week on sale.

With worldwide sales topping 75m copies to date, Puffin is predicting that the seventh book will be one of the bestselling titles of 2012. Its publication was announced yesterday by Kinney at the biggest annual event in children's publishing, the Bologna Children's Book Fair.

Little has been given away yet about the book's contents – even its title remains a secret – but a teaser image reveals that "love is in the air", while Kinney told publishers in Bologna that the storyline would centre around a school dance, and a love interest would enter the picture.

"I've only written about a third of it," he said. "And I haven't drawn a single picture yet. But it's all in my head and on my phone."

Fans of the series will be glad to know that the author has no plans of hanging up his pen just yet. "I'm still having a lot of fun with the books, and there are still a lot of stories to tell," he said in Bologna.

Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four forecast for Hollywood remake

1984 [1949] George Orwell
Hollywood is planning a new version of Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell's classic dystopian science-fiction novel which warned of the dangers of totalitarian government and spawned the term Big Brother.

Set in a world where three warring superstates battle each other eternally without any hope of victory, Orwell's 1949 novel has already had two big-screen adaptations. The 1956 version, starring Edmond O'Brien, Michael Redgrave and Jan Sterling, changed the storyline radically from the source material and is these days hard to find, as it was withdrawn from circulation by Orwell's estate following the expiry of a distribution agreement. The best-known version is Michael Radford's critically acclaimed 1984 retelling, starring John Hurt as everyman Winston Smith, the restless party worker who dares to dream of independent thought and possible romance. Richard Burton, in his final role, played the perfidious O'Brien, with Suzanna Hamilton as Julia, the object of Smith's doomed affections.

The new version is being put together by a consortium of Hollywood production companies including Imagine Entertainment, which is partly owned by Oscar-winning film-maker Ron Howard. Shepard Fairey, the street artist who produced the iconic Barack Obama "Hope" poster, was instrumental in bringing the project to the attention of the producers.

The consortium has secured rights from Orwell's estate and is currently searching for screenwriters, so the project is at an early stage. It's not known whether Howard himself is considering a director's role.

Nineteen Eighty-Four takes place entirely in the Oceania province of Airstrip One, formerly the United Kingdom, and while the new producers are firmly US-based there is nothing at this stage to suggest that they plan to relocate the action. The blockbuster success of films such as the Harry Potter series has proved beyond doubt that American audiences are no longer – if they ever were – put off by British accents.

As well as the two theatrical versions, Nineteen Eighty-Four has been a huge influence on cinema over the past half-century. Among the most notable are Terry Gilliam's flawed 1985 masterpiece Brazil, which takes many of its cues from Orwell's vision of a society governed by state-licensed mind control, and the 2006 comic-book adaptation V for Vendetta (based on Alan Moore's cult graphic novel), which also posits a British future under a fascist dictatorship. The latter has picked up something of a cult status in recent years after hackers' groups such as Anonymous adopted the iconic Guy Fawkes mask worn by vigilante V as a symbol of rebellion against tyranny.

'When you read these words, and all those that follow, I am afraid it must be because I am no longer here to speak them to you. Love is a disease; no doubt of it, and one which has proved mortal to many men down the ages . . .'

Oxford, 1887: Even as Victoria celebrates the fiftieth year of her reign, a stone's throw from the calm cloisters and college spires lies Jericho, a maze of seedy streets and ill-lit taverns, haunted by drunkards, thieves and the lowest sort of brazen female as ever lifted her petticoats.

When Stephen Chapman, a brilliant young medical student, is persuaded to volunteer at a shelter devoted to reforming the fallen women of Oxford, his closest friend Edward feels a strange sense of dread. But even Edward - who already knows the devastating effect of falling in love with the wrong woman - cannot foresee the macabre and violent events that will unfold around them, or stop Diana, the woman who seems destined to drive them apart.

Book Description
In our grade-focused school years, the rules of success seemed as simple as making straight As. However, in the working world, success is often far more complex, and formal education is only the baseline to ensuring career advancement in a highly competitive world, where prospective employees are up against international candidates who have been long schooled in skills. Now, a self-professed over-achiever shares how her professional triumphs wildly strayed from the honor roll tactics in an eye-opening, easy-to-read compilation of truisms from the trenches of real life. Out of the Classroom Lessons in Success: How to Prosper Without Being at the Top of the Class offers hard-won wisdom on achieving professional glory that will serve as an invaluable resource to anyone who is contemplating a career, or for parents who want to help their children lay the groundwork for success in the work place.

Inspired by the experience of her daughters, Kocialski realized that many young adults graduate and are completely unaware of a new playing field that is not always predicated by superior grades or talents. In eighteen concise chapters, the author draws from her professional achievements and challenges to debunk common myths that can lead astray aspiring professionals in the early years of forging a career. This slim, indispensable book serves up the “aha!” moments that will assist young hopefuls and parents in navigating the path to success. Inspiring and uplifting, this simply brilliant take on creating a career will help anyone realize their goals, anyone avoid common pitfalls, and lay the groundwork through the secondary talents, skills, and mindset necessary for optimal success.
Our Review
A book to inspire you to do more with your life and think differently about how you get there.  A very simplistic book, easy to read and understand, you will probably wonder why you didn't think of these lessons yourself, this book serves as a gentle guiding hand to point you in the right direction of success.

Although education is still important the author explains that focusing more on your true talents and passions will lead to higher success than trying to push yourself in areas your not really good at and only getting average grades.  Experience, social skills, planning and self promoting are a few of the subjects discussed.  You have to believe that you will succeed otherwise you won't.

A couple of things that I will remember are 'if you fail, don't keep repeating the same mistakes, hoping this time it will work, try something different or pause for a while' and 'always find the positive in every negative'.

The book contains examples of methods, experiences, conclusions at the end of each of the short chapters followed by short narratives/poems and illustrations (as above).  Slightly repetitive at times, maybe on purpose to aid you.
